Mamaw’s Bloody Conquest
I love tomatoes and I am a firm believer that the only two things money can't buy, is true love and home-grown tomatoes.
Tomatoes are a conquest bounty—taken from the New World back to Europe. Then, because they were just too juicy and delicious and sexy, that people might have thoughts and enjoy them, they were banned by the Church, long before they ended up in your nona’s favorite sauce or in my mamaw’s garden on a hot summer day. I present to you a dripping, bloody history, locked away in the gilt cage of our hearts, so that we can protect our precious memories from an unkind truth.
